Details
This large pottery ashtray is something of a relic from brewery history, from times when many of the larger towns in the country had their own brewery. Size 20cm square, made by Wade of Stoke.
The Friary Brewery in Guildford was built by 1868. Rationalization of the brewing industry after the Second World War led to the merger with Messrs Meux in 1956 to form Friary Meux., this in turn was followed in 1963 by Friary Meux being acquired by the Ind Coope division of Allied Breweries (UK) Ltd. Brewing in Guildford stopped by 1969.
